Chronic Inflammation and Coconut Oil

In this piece we look at another extremely valuable use for coconut oil. Inflammation, or to be more specific, chronic (long lasting) inflammation, is the curse of the twenty-first century. The medical profession refers to it as the Silent Killer. This is because so many people don’t know about it, not even if they have the condition. Keep reading to find out how coconut oil may help to prevent and reverse this dangerous phenomenon and why this is so important. In the US, chronic inflammation contributes to a lot of the leading causes of sickness and death. In fact, it’s one of the top 10 principal causes of mortality. It’s a similar story in other parts of the world where people consume a typical western diet, though poor diet is not the only cause [1].

Deaths linked to chronic inflammation include:

  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Cancers (various)
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Chronic lower respiratory disease
  • Diabetes
  • Kidney disease
  • Stroke
  • Others…

Coconut Oil, Anti-inflammatory Properties

If inflammation is the problem, then anything that can reverse this damaging bodily response is the solution. Coconut oil can help to cure chronic inflammation because of its anti-inflammatory properties. Before we get into that, let’s first look at what chronic inflammation actually is.

Chronic Inflammation Defined

Chronic inflammation begins as a slow burn deep within the body. The best way to describe it is as a kind of emergency response, a natural reaction to an infection or injury. Acute (short lived) inflammation is healthy and totally necessary as part of the healing process. You can see this when you cut or graze your skin for example. Chronic (lasting) inflammation, on the other hand, is anything but healthy and can wreak havoc in so many ways.

Vegetable (seed) oils are HIGHLY-inflammatory. Coconut oil is ANTI-inflammatory.

As soon as your immune system identifies a threat inside the body, such as trauma, bacteria, heat, toxins, etc., it sends out signals. It tells your body to launch proteins and white blood cells (called phagocytes) to address whatever the problem is. Your white blood cells actually eat the dead or damaged cells and any germs there might be. So the purpose of this immune response is to heal injuries and destroy infections; that’s it. The problem occurs when inflammation doesn’t clear up and lingers long after the job is done. Another cause is when the immune system gets confused and starts to misfire by accident. It’s ironic that your best friend and protector, the immune system, can turn against you to become your worst enemy [2].

When the Natural Defence Becomes Confused

Things take a turn for the worse once your body’s natural defence system becomes confused. It begins to attack joints, body tissues and also the blood vessels. These once pain-free areas then start to get painful and troublesome. Sometimes we just put aches and pains down to aging and learn to live with them. However, the cause of this discomfort may be more sinister than that. It could be the result of chronic inflammation, though most people never join the dots.

At its worst, chronic inflammation is at the heart of all those life threatening diseases people fear. This includes things like cancer, stroke, diabetes, dementia and heart attack, etc. If you suspect chronic inflammation may be eating away at your body, it’s time to reverse it, and coconut oil is going to be one of your best allies. Poor diet is one of the main contributors to this condition, so it makes perfect sense that superfoods are part of the solution.

Watch Out for Killer Vegetable Oils

Generations have grown up on “vegetable oils” that are really seed oils. But vegetable sounds better for marketing purposes. After all, vegetables are healthy so it’s seems logical to consumers that the so-called vegetable oils are healthy too. They’re not! In fact they’ve been slowly killing us and here’s why: they contribute greatly to chronic inflammation. For decades people have avoided natural saturated fats and oils, once referred to as artery-clogging-fats. We now know that natural saturated fats in moderation are not only safe but are a healthy part of any diet for a whole range of reasons.

Vegetable oils contain plenty of unnatural, unhealthy trans fats. It also hides in many products like cookies, cakes, crackers and pie crusts to name just a few of many. Food manufacturers often disguise trans fats on labels by using other names. Doing this conceals the killer ingredient, trans fats.

Alias names for trans fats on food labels include:

  • Partially hydrogenated oils
  • Hydrogenated oils
  • DATEM
  • Mono and di-glycerides
  • Shortening

Healthy coconut oil is 90% saturated fat, zero trans-fat and anti-inflammatory.

Fact: Artificial trans fats (trans fatty acids) are the worst type of fat for humans to consume period.

Processing Vegetable Oils

The bottles of clear, odorless oils on supermarket shelves may look pretty, but they’ve been through hell and back to get that way. And the end product, as fresh as it looks, is a killer oil. The manufacturers produce these oils by pressing and heating. They also add awful toxic solvents and certain industrial chemicals into the mix. Based on what we now know about vegetable oils, it’s shocking to still see them up for sale on supermarket shelves. These oils are also high in Omega-6 fats (polyunsaturated fats). Today we consume far too much omega-6 fatty acids and nowhere near enough omega-3. Over the course of time, this imbalance (high omega-6, low omega-3) causes chronic inflammation [3].

Remember, this all came about when we changed the diet in the late 1970s.

Natural coconut oil does NOT go through industrial processing.

The BIG Fat Lie

In 1977, people began to replace healthy saturated plant and animal fats with omega-6-rich vegetable oils. They did this based on the new US dietary guidelines. Health experts and renowned nutritionists told the American people that saturated fats in coconut oils and animal foods were killing them. No one knew it at the time, but these new food recommendations would prove to be the biggest dietary killers the world has ever seen.

Suddenly, healthy, natural foods were out and unnatural fare was in. This colossal blunder triggered the unprecedented global obesity epidemic we see today. Since the 1970s, food has been responsible for a huge increase in diet-related deaths. Chronic inflammation and type-2 diabetes were practically unheard of in Great Grandma’s day. It was a time when everyone enjoyed natural saturated fats and other “real” foods that humans evolved to consume.

The Conclusion

For decades “experts” told us that cholesterol was the enemy but they were wrong. The real enemy is chronic inflammation. There are various factors that contribute to this life-threatening condition, but poor diet is a major villain. The solution to the problem is simple: return to real foods and steer well clear of heavily processed meals. Avoid sugars and cut down on carbohydrates. If you do nothing else, at least chuck out those dangerous vegetable oils, laden with harmful trans fats. Welcome coconut oil into your life instead and experience improvements to your health on many levels [4].
